This Too Shall Pass
When It Feels Like It Will Never End, Remember What Allah swt Already Brought You Through.
Sometimes, when you’re in the middle of a hardship, it feels permanent. You wake up with it. You carry it throughout the day. You go to sleep thinking about it. It sits quietly in the back of your mind no matter what you’re doing. Even when you’re laughing with your friends or sitting with your family, a part of your heart is still carrying that burden.
You begin to wonder if this is simply what your life is going to look like now. If this sadness will always stay. If this waiting will never end. If this uncertainty will always follow you.
But before you convince yourself that your life will always feel this heavy, I want you to do something.
Think back a few years. There was probably something keeping you awake at night. Something that made your chest feel heavy. Something you cried over. Something you made countless duas about. At the time, it felt like the biggest problem you had ever faced. You couldn’t imagine how life would move forward. You thought, “How will I ever get through this?”
And yet... Here you are.
Maybe you don’t even remember the details anymore. Or maybe when you do remember them, you smile and think, SubhanAllah, I really thought my life was over.
That’s the strange thing about hardship. When you’re in the middle of it, it feels endless. It convinces you that this pain will stay forever. And that you’ll never feel okay again because you’ll always carry this weight. But when Allah swt brings you through it, you realize it was only ever a chapter. Not your whole story.
Hardships have something in common. They pass. And Allah swt carries you through them, one day at a time.
Think about all the things Allah swt has already brought you through.
The heartbreak you thought would destroy you. The rejection that made you question your worth. The exam you were certain you would fail. The financial difficulty that made you wonder how things would ever work out. The loneliness. The confusion. The unanswered questions. The nights you cried into your pillow because you couldn’t explain to anyone what you were feeling.
You survived every single one of those days. Not because you were stronger than everyone else. But because Allah swt was and is stronger than everything that’s trying to break you.
Sometimes we become so consumed by our current problem that we forget our own history. We remember the pain. But we forget the rescue. We remember the tears. But we forget that Allah swt wiped them away. We remember how scared we were. But we forget that Allah swt never abandoned us.
If Allah has saved you before, what makes you think He cannot save you again? The Lord who opened doors for you years ago has not changed. The Lord who answered your duas before still hears every whisper you make today. The Lord who carried you through your darkest nights has not become less merciful.
He is the same Allah. The same Ar-Rahman. The same Al-Latif. The same Al-Wakeel. The same Al-Fattah. The same Lord who has always known the ending of your story, even when you were panicking in the middle of it.
We spend too much time asking, “What if everything goes wrong?” But we rarely ask ourselves, “What if Allah helps me like He always has?” “What if this difficulty becomes another story I’ll one day tell with gratitude?” “What if the thing I’m crying over today becomes the very thing I thank Allah for tomorrow?”
How many times has that already happened in your life? How many disappointments eventually made sense? How many closed doors protected you from rooms you were never meant to enter? How many delays turned out to be mercy? How many people leaving your life made room for better people to enter it? How many unanswered duas later became answered in ways you never expected?
Allah’s plan has always been working, even when you couldn’t see it. The problem is that we often judge Allah’s plan halfway through the story. It’s like reading only one chapter of a book and deciding you already know how it ends.
We become impatient with a single chapter. But Allah sees every page. He sees the beginning. He sees the middle. He sees the beautiful ending that you cannot yet imagine.
Your current hardship is only one chapter. It is not the entire story. Don’t let one difficult season convince you that your whole life will always feel this way.
The winter eventually gives way to spring. The longest night eventually welcomes Fajr. The heaviest rain eventually stops. And the tears you cry today will not fall forever.
This dunya was designed to change. People change. Circumstances change. Feelings change. Difficulties change. Nothing in this world was created to last except your journey toward Allah swt.
So don’t build your entire hope on your circumstances. Build it on the One who controls your circumstances. There is a difference. If your hope is in people, they will disappoint you. If your hope is in money, it can disappear. If your hope is in your plans, they can change overnight. But if your hope is in Allah swt, then your hope is in the One who never changes.
Maybe today you’re carrying something that feels impossible. Maybe you’re reading this while waiting for news that could change your life. Maybe your heart is aching over someone you’ve lost. Maybe you’re exhausted from making the same dua every single day. Maybe you’re wondering if Allah swt still sees your struggle. He does. He always has.
And one day, perhaps sooner than you think, you’ll look back at this season the same way you look back at the hardships you once thought would never end. You’ll realize that Allah swt was carrying you through every moment. You’ll wonder why you spent so much time believing you had been abandoned when, in reality, you were being protected. You’ll see doors that only opened because others remained closed. You’ll understand delays that once frustrated you.
And your heart will whisper with so much gratitude and love, “Alhamdulillah.” And this is not because the hardship was easy. But because Allah swt never left you in it.
So if today your heart is heavy, let me remind you of something you may have forgotten. A few years ago, you had problems you barely remember today. At the time, they felt unbearable. At the time, you thought you wouldn’t make it. But Allah swt brought you through them. And He will bring you through this too.
Because the Allah who saved you then…is the same Allah who is taking care of you now.
So hold on. Keep making dua. Keep praying. Keep trusting. Keep believing. This chapter is not forever. This pain is not forever. This waiting is not forever. This, too, shall pass. And when it does, I hope you remember that it wasn’t luck that brought you through. It was Allah swt. It has always been Allah swt. And it will always be Allah swt.
